EventDV Magazine: May 2008
May 2008: Features
Philip Hinkle | When I took delivery of a new Sony BWU-200S 4X BD burner, my goal was to deliver wedding videos, with menus, on Blu-ray Disc, for minimal additional investment. Here's the workflow I developed, and how I got there.

May 2008: Tutorials
Lance Gray | We all know that in Photoshop you can type any text, save the Photoshop .psd file, then reopen it later and edit that text. But what if you want to make a slight alteration to your text, like extending the edges of a letter to make regular text into a killer logo? How would you do it? Turn your text into a shape.

Luisa Winters | In December, Lance Gray explained how to isolate a color in a still image in Photoshop. You can also achieve this effect on the video side of things, and for that, the perfect application is After Effects—which is, after all, Photoshop on a timeline.

May 2008: In the Studio
Joe McManus | Apple entered the battle for the living room entertainment market in 2007 with the release of the Apple TV device. It's begun to claim a modest amount of market share in the world of consumer set-top boxes lately, but it has professional applications too. Inside that unimposing plastic shell is a powerful multimedia device that can be invaluable in your studio.

May 2008: In The Field
The latest LED lights are taking the video world by storm, and promises of bright lights with very low battery drain have many of us excited. I've spent some time on recent shoots with two of the most popular choices, the Sony HVL-LBP and the Zylight Z90. The Zylight light costs $375 more than the Sony light, but the truly innovative features in the Zylight make it well worth the extra cost.

May 2008: Column: Cradle to Grave
Alan Naumann | As media consultants, we can do much more than videotape funerals and produce memorial tributes; we can help funeral homes evaluate their audio/video needs, give them choices, and offer training and support. We can also produce promotional videos for their websites and even commercials for TV.

May 2008: Column: HD Today
Anthony Burokas | Even though professional and prosumer camcorder prices haven't substantially changed over the years, the quality of the footage, and the features you have at your fingertips, have increased dramatically since the era of plubicon tubes and 3/4" tape. One the most revolutionary changes is the most recent one: the arrival of compact flash storage in mainstream HD video acquisition.

May 2008: Column: The Moving Picture
Jan Ozer | Back in the DV days, life was simpler. Now you need to be conversant in LongGOP, MPEG-2, AVCHD, and AVC-I, and you must know the raster and display resolutions (not to mention bit depths) of all of the candidates to choose your HD format. If you believe that tape is on the way out, as I do, MXF should be on your radar screen. You should also make sure your NLE provides the optimal platform for editing MXF content.

May 2008: Column: The Nonlinear Editor
Stephen Nathans-Kelly | Now that HD DVD is gone, will Blu-ray succeed DVD as the video delivery king? Or will it be streaming? Syncable set-tops? Holographic storage? The answer...

May 2008: Column: The Reel Deal
Kris Malandruccolo | Here's a question I hear all the time from wedding videographers: Are bridal shows effective? Can bridal shows really bring in the brides and, more importantly, the money?

Steve Yankee | Positioning is the essence of your business. It's everything your business stands for—its purpose—and why it exists. That's why finding your Unique Selling Proposition (USP) is all the rage.

Lee Rickwood | Finding the best vantage point for camera positions at live video events is often a serious challenge. A good line-of-sight is crucial for the best shot and most telling composition, but often physical hurdles must be overcome. Sometimes, all that's needed is a little creative ingenuity. At times, a dedicated device is required. Here are some of the latest and greatest entries in the camera support market.
