Yes, eSATA makes for a viable external solution . . . with one caveat: make sure that you have your cable securely connected. I've managed to malign the entire contents of an HDV project sitting on a 500GB drive when the external enclosure managed to move during a write operation. Twelve hours of CHKDSK/F later, I gave up and just restored from a backup. It's a sin that not all connectors lock. I've also found that not all PCI Express interface cards are built the same. For my PC, it was necessary to swap out a garden variety one with a $100 version from Wiebetech that featured a different chipset.
